Portland Hospital – The Day Care Unit – Rooms

Art Contact began the new year, in continued collaboration with Portland Hospital, as they continue with developments within the hospital. Art Contact were selected to commission a series of bespoke artworks for the Day Case Unit, more specifically for the bedrooms allocated to young people. With that in mind, Art Contact looked a developing the distinctive style established within the hospital and adapting it to this new location.

During the collaboration Portland Hospital outlined an interest in music, and the positive healing qualities it can have, especially in young people. Art Contact developed this idea and commissioned a digital artist to produce a series of images which depicted children playing and interacting with instruments or dancing to music. In line with the exciting art collection within the hospital, the artworks were printed onto high quality, easy to maintain acrylic panels and the artist contextualized the artworks, to include London landmarks.

Portland Hospital – Paediatrics

Art Contact was keen to continue the theme of ‘children and families at play’ from previous areas of the hospital and so collaborated with a digital artist to produce vibrant, eye-catching acrylic panels which depicted children playing in a park environment. With London landmarks contextualizing the images, Art Contact was keen to portray a positivity in subject matter whilst also celebrating the location of the hospital, within iconic buildings across our capital.

The Where’s Wally wallpaper, which had been so popular in a previous ward, has also been adapted to work on panels, again to encourage continuity between wards. Art Contact was keen to create a familiar environment for returning patients and visitors and the Where’s Wally style images have become a focal point of the hospital interior.

Through all stages of development, Art Contact worked closely with the Portland Hospital clinical team in choosing the perfect images for all to enjoy.

London Bridge Hospital

The brief from the client was to create an interesting vision for patients and staff with no view but an empty grey space without natural light. Virginia Grub from Art Contact set about sourcing the right artist to create an artificial garden set in the atrium by using dichoric etched components to create what we know as ‘The Light Garden’.

The Light Garden was formed and created by using 62 dichroic acrylic sandblasted discs to create floral designs with 48 fins placed along the face of the building which reflects from the mirrored wall opposite. This created an explosion of colours when the natural sunlight streams into the atrium from the south facing windows, as the light passes through and reflects off the glass it is transformed and takes on a journey around the space with flashes of rainbow of colours.

Portland Hospital – 215, 216 and ITU

The artwork is consistent with the themes previously created by the artist for use in the children’s areas of the Portland Hospital. The theme employs block colour children playing against a parkland backdrop of Regents Park. This imagery has now been developed for printing directly onto a white ROC substrait which forms the walls in the new units at 215 Portland Street.

Sections of the large scale murals have been cropped and printed onto acrylic or forex panels for corridor spaces and consulting rooms.

For the Gynaecology ward, a band of light theme was introduced taking flora and fauna imagery and inserting a contrasting band of colour horizontally or vertically across the artwork.

Portland Hospital – Reception and Children’s Reception

The Portland Hospital wanted to create a welcoming and bright atmosphere in the primary areas of the hospital using artworks that were created through photo-montage technique. The artworks, designed by one of our artists, were digitised montages of photographs taken by the artist of landmarks around Great Portland Street and Regents Park which were then mounted onto glass or perspex panels.

The hospital wanted to reflect their service as specialists in Obstrecics, Women’s health and Paediactrics by employing the theme of mother and child through the artworks used throughout the hospital. In the children’s areas a bright and fun colour palette was chosen to complement the interior design while the images were taken from children playing in Regents Park.

The Crystal Centre is a new-build residential and outreach facility for the ‘elderly with dementia’ developed at Broomfield Hospital (Chelmsford) by the North Essex Mental Health Partnership Trust.

Through the various activities and therapies available at the Centre, the patients will be working towards the same ‘clearer thinking’. However, within the Day Unit, the images were carefully chosen to stimulate patients’ memories and assist them in recalling experiences from normal family life.
