Canmoor Developments

Public Art at Accelerator Park

Art Contact was approached by Hale Architects on behalf of Canmoor Development to consult on and manage a public art project at Accelerator Park – Dale Manor Business Park in Sawston, South Cambridgeshire. The project required the sourcing of multiple artists and makers across several potential sites, narrowing the options to a single artist and location for full production and installation. This process was carried out in close collaboration with Greater Cambridge Planning.

Our brief was to identify the right artist capable of translating the public art vision into a site-specific work that would resonate with the community, complement the location, and meet planning requirements.

Art Contact wrote a detailed artist brief, prepared a project timeline, and facilitated Teams meetings with all stakeholders throughout the process. We also drafted and managed the necessary contracts for both the selected artist and the developer, ensuring smooth communication and clear responsibilities.

Following a thorough consultation and selection process, Charley Peters, in collaboration with Creative Return Ltd, was commissioned to create ‘Orbit Fusion’, a site-specific public artwork designed to engage visitors and enhance the visual identity of the park.

Art Contact then continued to oversee the design, production and installation of the artwork including the artists involvement with the YES (Youth Engagement Scheme) programme to engage with children from the local school and to include their ideas in the final artwork.

The project exemplifies Art Contact’s expertise in managing complex public art commissions, bridging creative vision, stakeholder needs, and practical delivery to achieve a lasting and meaningful impact in the built environment.

Open University

The Open University campus has a large collection of artworks from around the world. Art Contact has been assisting the team at the Open University to maintain, conserve and restore their collection for many years. Most recently Art Contact was appointed to conserve and re-frame where appropriate their large collection of limited edition prints and paintings.

The pictures were largely re-framed in similar moulding so that any combination of artworks could be hung together as required. When required artworks were enclosed behind acrylic covers to add additional protection to vulnerable artworks.

Urbanest – King’s Cross Central

‘Unity’ by Simon Hitchens – As part of the major regeneration programme at Kings Cross Central, Urbanest Properties invited Art Contact to commission a ‘Public Art’ sculpture for the main entrance to the newly designed building by Glenn Howells architect, accommodation for students which completed September 2013.

The redevelopment of the former King’s Cross Goods Yard, now known as King’s Cross Central, owes much of its appeal to the proud industrial heritage which formed it.

Simon Hitchens was commissioned to create this graphic sculpture which visually references the heavy engineering used in the area’s industrial past. Unity’s form is suggestive of two large and redundant cogged wheels.

The granite element symbolises the robust building materials used in the old Goods Yards, where commodities were moved about by rail and cart. The more technologically challenging blue resin element hints both at the Regents Canal and the, important part it played in the transport of goods, but also the inspirational, state of the art future being built at King’s Cross Central.

The simple graphic form of the sculpture can be seen as a stylised letter X, but also articulates the unity between two separate yet co-dependant bodies: a balance of essential opposites and a celebration of progress across the generations.

''As part of our development at King's Cross student accommodation we had a section 106 commitment to install Public Art. We wanted the art to reflect the heritage of the site, our commitment to quality and stand the test of time. We also needed to ensure our partners in the project KCCLP, Argent and Camden Planning department were equally satisfied that the Public Art added to the environment. I approached Virginia at Art Contact and she immediately put me at ease with the whole process whilst keeping all interested parties engaged. I have to say I enjoyed the whole process. After visiting the site, Art Contact carried out in depth research, reviewing the site and its history, in order to establish a brief to present to selected artists. Their research ensured that the final result could be fully integrated into the site and reflect heritage. Throughout Virginia sustained constant communication ensuring that we were fully informed at all times as well as liaising between ourselves and the artist from start to finish. We are delighted with the result and would be happy to recommend Art Contact as an Art Consultant and Commissioning Agent for art commissions.''

London Bridge Hospital

The brief from the client was to create an interesting vision for patients and staff with no view but an empty grey space without natural light. Virginia Grub from Art Contact set about sourcing the right artist to create an artificial garden set in the atrium by using dichoric etched components to create what we know as ‘The Light Garden’.

The Light Garden was formed and created by using 62 dichroic acrylic sandblasted discs to create floral designs with 48 fins placed along the face of the building which reflects from the mirrored wall opposite. This created an explosion of colours when the natural sunlight streams into the atrium from the south facing windows, as the light passes through and reflects off the glass it is transformed and takes on a journey around the space with flashes of rainbow of colours.

PPD Development

Art Contact’s brief from MEPC- Granta Park and PPD was for a sculpture to be sited infront of the new PPD building. They wanted something clean and modern, and abstract in style. Virginia Grub of Art Contact, selected three artists who she felt would be perfect for the space. Each artist presented their brief to PPD and Granta Park, from which one artist was chosen to develope their concept further.

Title: ‘Family’
The work dipicts a Father,Son/Daughter and Mother figure, placing the work slightly leaning towards each other to show a family nurturing their young.
This is composed of three sculptures. Each sculpture is fabricated in grade 316 stainless steel with satin brushed effect finish.

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital – Bolsover Street

The brief is to develop and implement an art strategy that is relevant to the work of the hospital and the quality of care and expertise offered by RNOH specialists which also integrates with the approach taken to interior design.

The art work will support the internal approach to way finding and therefore needs to incorporate the principle colour schemes planned for the facility.

The long and illustrious history of the hospital and the dedication of its staff should be represented and where possible the art should include the opportunity to distract visitors by providing access to the ‘story’ of the RNOH.

In answer to the brief Art Contract developed a series of story walls to inform visitors about the RNOH together with a series of graphic images printed onto acrylic and floated on the walls with hidden fixings.

Whittington Hospital

A number of locations requiring art were identified and suitable artists were proposed and designs accepted.

The design and production of the pieces were all completed on time and on budget despite various ongoing problems with the build schedule outside our control resulting in several redesigns of several of the pieces.

Friezes were installed on the 2 and 3rd floors, a large montage was installed in the main reception and a colourful mural on the ground floor.

Outside a parralax sculpture was designed and installed depicting the Hospital’s logo of the Cat and the ‘W’ which assembled and then dis-assembled as the designed viewing point was passed.

The Waldron Health Centre

The Waldron Health Centre, based in New Cross, groups 5 local GP practices along with ancillary community services (Pharmacy, Mother & Baby services, Community Youth Programmes, etc) into a building at the heart of the New Cross locality. The building benefits from a full-height atrium, clad in beech veneer, being he chosen location for  ‘New Cross’ montage which was commissioned for the 2nd Floor.

The montage, featuring local noteworthy architecture, highlights the rich mix of styles and forms that is the glory of urban London. The soft, pastel colourway was selected to harmonise both with the beech veneer of the atrium and with a dichroic film panel installation, installed as part of the build phase, on the 1st Floor.

In 2008 the Waldron Health Centre won the award for Better Primary Healthcare Building.

The Wellcome Trust’s Sanger Institute is one of the premier centre of genomic discovery and understanding in the world. It leads ambitious collaborations across the globe to provide the foundations for further research and transformative healthcare innovation.

Our brief from the client to reflect the overall research programme at Genome Centre now referred to as The Sanger Institute in an abstract form. ‘You’ by Colin Rose was commissioned being 3 Elements read as one in Mirror polished stainless steel.

Mirror polished stainless steel was used to reflect the surroundings and the people passing through the main walk way throughout the day. The three elements make up the world ‘You’ as seen throughout the day in the reflection which holds the key to our DNA.  The work is subtle and yet has a significant meaning to the site.

Queen Charlotte’s Hospital

The brief was to be bright, child-oriented, durable and within a set budget. Working with Emily Allchurch of Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, Robert Branchdale of Art Contact commissioned the sculptor Chris Plowman to create four works in sheet steel, based on collage artwork carried out by young patients in the pediatric outpatients unit.

A set of steel sculptures by Chris Plowman has just been installed at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London. They stand on four granite plinths between the main entrance of the Maternity Unit and the main entrance of the Pediatric Outpatient Unit.

The works depict Jungle Animals, Farmyard Animals, Birds and Fish. The sculptures succeed brilliantly in providing a bright, charming and optimistic identity to an otherwise undistinguished outdoor space.

BT has won the “Fit out Workplace (Major Projects)” award, both on the National and Regional levels, for its new offices at City Place, Gatwick. Works commissioned by Art Contact are an important aspect of the interior, and we are delighted to have contributed to BT’s success.

Two major installations by David MacIlwaine were installed together with a panel work by Ian Wilkinson.

‘Water Curtain’ is a suspended mobile sculpture above the reception/street area running parallel with the front glass wall of the building. Shapes of light gathering and mirror acrylic are suspended at different heights by a number of cables. ‘Fire Piece’ consists of a rectangular white aluminium frame 3m x 5.5m, strung with translucent nylon mesh as a support structure for 6mm diameter light gathering acrylic rods in red, orange and blue. In addition, a series of abstract perspex installations by Ian Wilkinson were commissioned by Art Contact for the main reception area.

Glass and Bronze at BT Oswestry

Glass panels by Graham Jones, an external bronze abstract by Dennis Westwood and paintings by Charlotte Cornish at BT’s latest Workstyle offices.

Graham Jones’ impressive piece for the reception area consists three panels of 12mm toughened glass, each measuring 1.43m x 2.7m, etched on one side and colour enamelled on the other.

The second consists of two screens, slumped glass in front and 12mm toughened pre-sandblasted glass, acid-etched, behind. It both affords light and provides privacy to the internal theatre area.

Dennis Westwood’s external bronze provides a powerful contrast. Entitled ‘Infineum II’ it is cast in silicon bronze and stands 1.4 metres high on a granite base. It is sited to be viewed both from the external approach and from within the atrium.

Cambourne Business Park

Installation of two large hand-tufted wool rugs by the artist Yve Houghton at Cambourne Business Park.

Joint developers Wrenbridge and Development Securities are initiating a strategy for the integration of contemporary art in the built environment. Art Contact’s initial brief from Peter Jarman of Wrenbridge was to commission abstract artworks, which would bring individuality and colour to the large reception areas of the two main buildings.
Two works, both in 16mm wool pile were produced: A wall-hanging diptych 8 metres high and a floor rug 4 metres by 3 metres.

“The rugs help to provide a stylish working atmosphere, and we are delighted with the result” comments Jarman.

In addition, advised by Virginia Grub of Art Contact, the Business Park has acquired a collection of paintings and framed abstract limited editions and monoprints, on a rental scheme allowing change after an initial period. Local Cambridge painter Charlotte Cornish is represented in building 2030 with a large vibrant abstract oil on canvas and a series of screenprints.

Other artists on display include Stephen Bartlett and “the grand old man of English abstract printmaking”, Albert Irvin.
The inclusion of the colour, individuality and aesthetic impact of well-chosen contemporary artworks is contributing to Cambourne Business Park’s success as a working environment second to none in the region.

British Telecom – Temple Quay, Bristol

‘Satellite’, the latest major installation in Art Contact’s programme for the use of art in BT offices, has just been installed at Temple Quay, Bristol.

The work, created by Diana Edmunds in collaboration with David Macilwaine, consists of a pair of suspended mobile installations, one of 3-metre diameter, the other 2.75 metre diameter. The larger of the two elements has two additional outer rings 4.7metres in diameter, suspended from the main cable and revolving around the whole. Materials used are light edge acrylic, mirrored acrylic, stainless steel and structural aluminium.

The sculpture refers to the concept of satellite communications. The integral use of light refers to the idea of optics in communication technology, as well as acting as a unifying and communicating factor between the two elements of the work.

Multicoloured light bounces between the satellites and is reflected on the walls of the atrium.
Particularly after dark, the effect is, according to one source; “amazing – after a long day it really has a positive effect – a great success.”
