At first glance, Ceren Muftuoglu’s work appears ordered and architectural: fields of colour and geometry held within carefully constructed systems. Move closer, however, and that precision begins to soften. Individual stitches emerge, subtle shifts in tension become visible and repeated forms reveal the quiet irregularities of the hand.

A London-based Turkish textile artist, Muftuoglu brings together painting, hand stitching and geometric abstraction to explore the relationship between repetition, rhythm and imperfection. Her background in fashion design established an early sensitivity to textiles, pattern and construction, but in her artistic practice these familiar materials are released from their traditional or functional roles. Thread becomes a means of drawing; stitching becomes a way of building surface, movement and depth.

Working from her West London studio, Muftuoglu creates each piece using cotton yarn stitched by hand onto acrylic-painted canvas. The works begin with digitally developed patterns that provide an underlying structure, before being slowly translated through the physical act of stitching. As thread accumulates across the surface, small variations in spacing, direction and density gently disrupt the original geometry, creating tactile, almost relief-like compositions.

It is within this tension between system and variation that the work finds its energy. Precision sits alongside imperfection; digital planning gives way to the individuality of the handmade. From a distance, patterns appear controlled and rhythmic, while closer inspection reveals something more intimate—the trace of time, touch and repetition embedded within every stitch.

Muftuoglu’s work rewards this changing perspective, inviting us to move between order and irregularity, surface and depth, and to discover the subtle beauty that emerges when a perfect system is interpreted by hand.
