Westerhuis, Ronald
After seven years of travel, exploring all corners of the world, Ronald Westerhuis began a career in the offshore world of Oil Rigs, heavy structures and massive feats of design using an abundance of stainless steel.
After going through an experimental phase early in his career using a variation of forms, shapes and material, he has now found his way working with stainless steel, a metal which is as cold, hard, indestructible as it is vulnerable and sensitive, a medium full of character inviting to touch.
He explores lines, balance, gravity, finishings and new techniques to create sculptures that provide elements of positive energy within their surroundings or environment.
Driven by the power of sculptures, Ronald is constantly in search of the ‘ultimate’ shape and dimension. He references the towering and prominent structures built by man over centuries; “The Angel of the North”, “The Arch of St Louise”, “The Eiffel Tower” and also the Pyramids as an ongoing source of inspiration upon his work. He too wants to create and build Landmarks.
Westerhuis views the Landmark, a traditional form of recognition for its beholder, as a power that can aid economical boost. He asserts that Landmarks are the pride of cities, nations and one day, planets. His understanding of and beliefs upon the notion of sculpture have developed out of a well-established interest in the fields of science, industry and architecture. Like Westerhuis, their practitioners are unrelenting in their search for the highest outcome.
