San Jose, Teo

I am a Spanish sculptor, Teo San José, ARBS. In the last few years I have been exhibiting my work in different venues within the United Kingdom (2006 Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy, 2007 Sculpture Forecourt of the RBSS, 2008 London Festival of Architecture).

All sculptures are made of regular steel or stainless steel sheets. The sheets are 5-10 mm thick for sculptures up to 2m height, and 20-80 mm thick for larger commissions.

One advantage of my outdoors works is their extraordinary stability, not only because they always rest on three standing points, but also because of their aerodynamic design and their considerable weight.

As regards their preservation, all coloured sculptures (made of regular steel) have up to seven different coatings for protection, which makes maintenance unnecessary. The uncoloured sculptures made of stainless steel require no maintenance either, since this material is unalterable. I have harnessed this inalterable quality to develop a new series (“Moonwind sailers”), which is a stainless steel rendition of the parallel “Fire sailers” series. This allows me to offer two versions –coloured and stainless— of the same sculpture.
