Art Contact

Macilwaine, David

David Macilwaine is a painter and sculptor.

His works have been exhibited in Europe and America and are included in a number of private collections.

He has made a number of suspended mobile installations with Art Contact for BT which are hung in the company’s atrium’s. These are made of light edge acrylic, mirrored acrylic, stainless steel and structural aluminium.

These sculptures have grown out of the technique and ideas developed in his small sculptures.

“I am grateful to my son, Dante, who in 2005 first suggested that these sculptures could be created on a large scale using 12mm steel rod instead of my normal 2mm wire.”

Working together, using oxy acetylene and a beautiful period vice set in an even older anvil, the first pieces were created for the exhibition Steel Lines in the River Cafe garden. The steel rods come in 6m lengths, so it is necessary to join rods as one goes along.

The finished pieces that are not powder coated are allowed to rust naturally, giving them a beautiful orange colour, which changes with the weather and light. It also means that they never require any maintenance!
