Fraser, Mel

Mel Fraser is a sculptor of exceptional talent who will assuredly be at the forefront of collected sculptors of the future. Working both figuratively and in the abstract her stone pieces have a presence that cannot be ignored.

’I have had no formal training and my background in Art has been varied, starting as a commercial artist, specialising in fine airbrush illustration, computer graphics and animation. In 1989 I started to experiment with clay on a large scale for casting. During this time I met Sir John Mills RSBA who has supported my interest and move towards stone carving.’

From 1996 to 1999 she was an active working member of Cambridge Artworks. Plans for the future are to continue working on a large scale. This includes 'other side of Consciousness: a two part project where a framework measuring 26 feet by 12 by 6 feet high has been constructed in toughened steel, and is awaiting carving and placement of four pieces of alabaster which have been cut from one large bolder. (This being significant to the whole concept of the piece.)

Work started in 2000 on 2 large Works of Persian travenine each containing an over life-size figure. At present I'm near completion of one of these figures (called 'Destiny').

Her first public commission to design and produce a memorial for Comberton Village, near Cambridge will be installed in March 2003.
